Clinique (Gift Set) Haul & Review

Friday, December 02, 2016

A few weeks ago Clinique had a gift bundle set that they gave away if you bought two or more products from their brand. I was in dire need of some foundation. You can probably guess what ensued! I'm not normally one of those if-I-buy-this-one-product-I-get-all-these-(unnecessary)-things-for-free people, but it was honestly such a fantastic deal, that I was already going to spend quite a bit of money on a bottle of foundation, that if I literally spent a whee bit more on another item I could have all these other products (for free!!). The inner beauty blogger voice in my mind didn't help the avoidance either!

Superbalanced Silk Makeup - 01 Silk Porcelain (VF-N)

I have been to a Clinique counter before to learn about my skin type (read all about it!) which made this experience a whole lot easier; I knew what the lady wanted to know about my skin and I knew what kind of coverage I wanted. Ideally, I wanted a foundation that evened out my skin tone and helped cover my eyebags (with the help of concealer, of course!) but didn't however cover up my freckles (I love freckles!). My skin swings back and forth on the spectrum of oily and dry, so much so that you can either see the oil on my face or the skin is literally peeling off because it's so dry (both situations being on my T-zone). My skin on my face also doesn't tan very much at all, so I didn't need to consider tonal change in the seasons.

The lady at the counter was super helpful and brought out a few different foundation types in a few different shades (shock horror, I was the lightest shade of them all) and tested them on my cheek. Alas we found this one!

What's so great about this is that it includes SPF-15, which living in New Zealand (i.e we don't have much of an ozone layer over us) is great to have it built in. I have worn it most days that I have owned it, and I have noticed that it lasts quite a long time; I don't tend to apply a lot of product, but my opinion still stands. It builds pretty great and blends really well when I use a round, circular brush to apply. I also love that the bottle is just the bottle, I am not a fan of pumps as I tend to shake the bottle and dip my brush into the inside of the lid and use that little bit of product in there.

Wow. This mascara. It's just. So. Good. I honestly don't quite know what to say about this, it has everything that I want in a mascara! The wand has lots of tiny rubber bristles, which is fantastic as I have found that wands that have hair/fur/non-plastic or long bristles make my eyelashes stick together in clumps. The formula is great, it's not too thick or too thin, it builds pretty well and at the end of the day it's pretty easy to remove. I do have to say, that if I have it on all day and don't touch up my make-up at all, it can sometimes come off onto the skin right below my eyes; but that's not something that happens all the time.

This blush is so so adorable. It's not just a baby pink shade, but it also has little hints of sparkles inside that gives off such a sweet shimmer. This blush is nice and subtle, and doesn't need a lot of blending if you stipple to apply. The compact it's in is nice and thin, it doesn't take up a lot of room in my make-up bag at all (which I have found is quite an issue with blushes, and compacts that have mirrors inside).

This eyeshadow was the second product I bought in order to qualify for the gift bag of products. Honestly, I am simply obsessed with eyeshadows, and as soon as I found out that I needed a second product, I went straight for the eyeshadow counter!

I have recently rediscovered my love for eyeshadow sticks; I used to have quite a few when I first started using makeup as I was (and still am) lazy and learning, but as I gained more confidence with my makeup, I got rid of them as I thought they were only for beginners. Boy oh boy how wrong I was!

I was torn for a long period of time as to which shade I wanted, and I am pretty sure that I spent almost as long, if not longer, time on picking this eyeshadow as I did picking the foundation! This shade is such a sweet nudey-goldy-shimmery colour; I relate it to opal, where in certain lights it gives off a different colour; sometimes it's yellow, sometimes it's green, sometimes it's gold. I find it to be a great base product or a blending shade on my eyes.

This shade of pink, I feel is almost the absolute perfect pink lip. It's a very soft yet bold shade, and in between a hot-pink and a baby-pink.

However, something that makes me not want to reach out to use it that often is the formula. It's described as a "soft matte", and it makes me feel a little uneasy. It's actually feels like it's a matte lip that hasn't quite set properly. And after a long day of wearing it, it makes my lips feel very weird; not in an allery-reaction kind of way, just in a what's-going-on-with-this-lipstick kind of way. I have found a way around this weird feeling, and that is to in every few hours or so to completely remove it from my lips and then to reapply it. Now that I have discovered this whee trick, I will continue to use it.

Honestly, I haven't given this makeup remover much of a chance since I have recently transitioned over to Micellar Water to remove my makeup, as the skin around my eyes is far too sensitive to use anything other than Micellar Water on it. This product is however pretty darn powerful, calling it a "solvent" is a pretty accurate term! I do have a little issue with the bottle, as it is simply just open at the top, and it doesn't have a smaller hole so that only a little bit of product comes out; I have a problem of accidentally knocking open bottles over or pouring too much onto the cotton pad I'm using.

Again, along with the makeup remover, I haven't given this product enough of a chance to use as I am too scared to use it on the skin around my eyes. It does smell really fresh and the consistency feels very, soap-y, in the best way, it doesn't feel like I'm just using water to clean my face.

Over the past couple of years or so I have started using a eye-skin moisturiser as I have discovered just how sensitive that skin really is. I have started using this Serum as a moisturiser around my eyes after I have washed my makeup off, as I have found that removing makeup can be quite tough and I need a good moisturiser to use afterwards.

Just like the Serum above, I have been using this moisturiser after I wash my face at night. I find good moisturisers hard to come by as it seems they either make my skin really oily or they don't moisturise enough. This, is the perfect inbetween. I love using this at night before I go to bed as it makes my skin so silky soft in the morning.

Makeup bag - Lala DK

This bag is such a fantastic sized bag, it's not too big but not too small. It's also such a beautiful design, it looks like it's been painted in watercolours and I love the floral pattern. This bag would possibly be a great clutch to use, but I have made it my makeup bag for when I go away.

I hope you enjoyed my whee review of all these Clinique products! Have you tried any of these products before? If so, what did you think of the Makeup Solvent and/or the Facial Soap?

Until next time,
