Empties: Candles

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Today I'd like to do a Empties post, but instead of a beauty themed one, this one is a candle themed post! I am very fond of my candles, and as I've gotten a Yankee Candle Carousel Advent Calendar this year I thought it'd be a perfect time to share what I've been going through candle-wise lately!

Disclaimer: these are all of the candles I've been burning this year, I haven't gone through all of these in the matter of weeks! I have, however been lighting a tealight candle from my Advent Calendar every night in December as they're all festive scents and I want my room to smell festive!

Blanco Collection - Vanilla Caramel (large)
This candle had such a joy of a smell, and was my first soy-made candle. However, I'm not sure if it was the fact it was made out of soy, or if it was the diameter of the candle (confident it was the latter, could have easily fit a second wick!) but not all of the wax ended up burning and I'm very upset by it. The scent was a very soft yet rich vanilla one and the jar itself was a cute ceramic-concrete jar, I'm definitely keeping it to hold my fine point pens in!

Yankee Candle - Summer Scoop (104g)
This was my very first Yankee Candle, and possibly my first candle that I was allowed to burn (my parents weren't fans of candles in the house) and wow this was certainly something to begin with! It smells as though I've doused the room in a berry milkshake or in icecream, but in a good way! It's a good smell that lasts for a long time and doesn't take ages to smell.

Glasshouse - Ohau: Ilima Milk & Honey (60g)
This candle I got for my birthday and I  was very upset when I finished it. It smells like a delicious combination of floral and sweet, which is spot of for a flower and sugary made scent! It's very delicate and I often forgot it was lit because it's quite subtle. I would like to see this candle be made in a future batch with a stronger scent as I really liked it but felt it didn't smell enough, ya know?

Glade - French Vanilla (113g)
I am very upset that Glade seems to have stopped their Lavender & Vanilla candle, but this was a very nice substitute. I think I have spoken about Glad before on here but I must say it again; I am very surprised for a brand that is known for their toilet sprays and hand soap, to have such a lovely range of un-artificial smelling candles! They last a good length of time and are the perfect desk or bedside table size!

Yankee Candle - Winter Glow (voitive)
This candle I got as a voitive in my Advent Calendar, which I have written about below, keep on scrolling babes!

Yankee Candle - Black Coconut (votive)
This candle I bought because 1) it was black and badass and 2) it smell so gosh darn good. I'm very hit and miss when it comes to coconut scent, but this was very musky as it had a cedarwood base to the scent. My boyfriend really liked me burning this candle as he's not a big fan of the sweet scents and this one had a very "strong" (I don't want to say "manly" but that's the only word that comes to mind) smell.

Yankee Candle - Mango Peach Salsa (votive)
This candle I bought on a whim as Spotlight was having a 30% off candles sale, but I'm very glad I got it! It is very very mango-ey with a hint of peach. It's very fresh and perfect for the summer time. I have however found it to be a strong scent and I only burn it for an hour or so before I blow it out, as the scent lasts a long time after it's been blown out!

Advent Calendar:

Yankee Candle - Candy Cane Lane (tealight)
I heard great things about this candle in a YouTube review video (unfortunately, with Vlogmas going on I have lost track of who is saying what) so I had very high expectations, which were moderately met. In my calendar I have only had one of these scented candles, so I am hoping that this scent is actually stronger. It's exactly the smell of candy canes, which is one of my top five things about Christmas, however I found it to be very subtle and I imagined this scent to be stronger. Still love it though!

Yankee Candle - Winter Glow (tealight)
This candle I would say is similar to a cotton scented candle; it's very fresh and clean and subtle. I don't know if I would personally buy it myself, but I feel like it's a very homely smell you'd have lit during an open home or a garden party.

Yankee Candle - Icicles (tealight)
Similar to the Winter Glow candle, I feel like this is a very homely scent, but more of a "cool winter night" type smell matching it's baby blue colour. I also think there is a subtle undertone of vanilla in this, which is probably why I was a fan of this colour. Again, I can imagine this candle being lit whilst having a get-together, perhaps at the end of a barbeque when everyone is unwinding around a table telling jokes.

Yankee Candle - Spiced Orange (tealight)
I have this candle lit as I write this and it's a very good pick-me-up scent. Oranges are my second favourite fruit (behind strawberries) and this is a perfect combination of a ginger spice mixture and the brightness (don't know how that fits in with a scent, but we're going with it!)  of orange for a fantastic scent. I can imagine having the larger jar version of this burning whilst cuddled up in a blanket watching a movie.

Yankee Candle - Snowflake Cookie (tealight)
This one along side Candy Cane Lane are tied for my favourites from this calendar. To me, this scent couldn't be any more warm and inviting. It smells like freshly iced gingerbread cookies, which is a little bit odd as there isn't any ginger scent in it! I'm definately going to go on a hunt and see if this is available to purchase in New Zealand!

Yankee Candle -  Bundle Up (tealight)
With the colour of this candle I was expecting a pinecone type of a smell, but it is in fact the complete opposite with hints of citrus and something I would associate with cleanliness (probably because we use an orange scented varnish at home to clean our wooden furniture!) but I can't quite put my finger on it. I have asked my boyfriend for his opinion and he said it was "alright" and I'd say I'm a fan but not sure if I'd go buy it myself though.

Now that I've rambled on about my massive candle collection, what are some of your favourite scents that you'd like me to try? I'm a fan of the sweet smells. Also, are you a soy or a wax candle kind of person? I'd love to hear what you have to say about the two.

PS, I have tried to hyperlink where I can with the candles so you can find them for yourselves, but where I haven't means I cannot find them online.

PPS, I did have an Aromatherapy Company candle, but for the life of me I cannot remember the scent as it was a gift and I threw out the jar so I can't show it boo.

  1. I have a burner where I can use melts or oils but I don't use it as much since faffing about with tea lights can be a pain. I've recently been burning a Maraca candle which is rose scented and I loooove it.

    1. Oooer, my old flatmate had a burner and it made the flat smell so so good! I'm actually quite tempted to try one out though!
